Cars, trucks, and SUVs are often bought more with the heart than the head, but when it comes time to sell your once-beloved ride, often you can wish you had taken more long-term considerations into the equation, such as resale value. The used automotive market can fluctuate wildly, just take a look at the last five years, for example. But one constant is that some models are always going to fetch more dollars when re-sold, thereby presenting better overall value.
J.D. Power’s annual best resale rating list compiles the list of cars, trucks, and SUVs expected to depreciate the least over the next five years, and according to the organization, the SUVs below will provide the best bang for your buck when it time to sell and get a new ride.
Using a 100-point system, each model below is among the best small, midsize, and large SUVs for expected resale value over the next five years from both luxury and mainstream manufacturers. As such, we have used J.D. Power’s quality and reliability score (also out of 100 possible points) as a tiebreaker.
After all, a model with a high resale price is less of a value proposition if you’ve sunk more money into keeping it on the road (the Jeep Wagoneer missed out on our list, as such). Here are the top 10 SUVs for expected resale value over the next five years.
The SUVs listed below are ranked by their expected residual value over the next five years according to J.D. Power‘s 2023 best resale ratings list. Also included are expected resale values in five years for all models bought brand new for 2023 and driven 12,000 years using information from CarEdge.
10 2023 Porsche Macan
Starting Price: $58,950
A driving shot of a 2022 Porsche Macan
Luxury models of any kind aren’t known for holding their value well, but the Porsche Macan is an exception. In fact, the compact sports SUV is the only luxury SUV to have a resale value rating above 85 in J.D. Power’s 2023 study.

The Macan’s expected resale value can likely be attributed to its lower asking price versus its Porsche stablemates, and that it competes in the red-hot compact luxury segment. To boot, the Macan brings all the expected sportiness of Porsche in an athletic package with 261 to 375 horsepower, spry handling, and upscale appointments. If you want the best resale value among luxury SUVs, the Macan is certainly the top choice.
9 2023 Ford Bronco
Starting Price: $35,890
An outdoor shot of a 2023 Ford Bronco
Toyotas may dominate this list overall, but there’s another segment of SUVs that hold their value quite well — models that specialize in tackling the wilderness. The Bronco is no exception as it holds its value better than any other Blue Oval badged SUV on the road. The Bronco has been catching up on Jeep Wrangler sales as of late, and it seems used models will still fetch a pretty penny.

The Bronco can be had in a number of ways, with either two or four doors, a trio of available engines, a high vast number of trims, and enough customization options to make one’s head spin. What is constant is an SUV that is primed to tackle the trails and be far more livable to drive everyday than other off-road specialty models. And with its popularity continuing to rise, it’s a good bet buyers will get a good return on their investment when it comes time to sell.
8 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe
Starting Price: $56,095
Red 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe driving under a bridge
The Chevy Tahoe is a stalwart among the full-size SUV segment having been around for nearly 30 years. And it occupies a unique spot on our list for the SUVs with the best resale value, because it’s the only full-size offering to take a spot.

The 2023 Tahoe is available in six total trims, ranging from the more basic LS to the far more upscale High Country, and it can be had with a choice of V-8 engines or a six-cylinder diesel. With ample space in all three rows and a whopping max of 123 cubic feet of storage space, the Tahoe is a competent family hauler, and one that won’t break the bank at the dealer or serve as a money pit when it comes time to sell.
7 2023 Kia Telluride
Starting Price: $37,255

Depending on where you live, finding a 2023 Kia Telluride selling at its MSRP can feel like finding a three-row, midsize SUV needle in a haystack. The Telluride has been the darling of its segment since its introduction for the 2020 model year for its extremely strong overall competence. And with buyers practically lining up to put one on their driveways, it’s no surprise the Telluride is expected to fetch a pretty penny on the used market.

The Telluride has been slightly tweaked for 2023, and an even more expansive list of standard features, like navigation and dual 12.3-inch displays, makes it more compelling than ever. The Telluride tops the list of just about every “best three-row midsize SUV” list out there and for good reason. It’s extremely well equipped for the price, plenty powerful, comfortable, offers ample passenger and cargo space, and to boot, it holds its value well.
6 2023 Toyota Highlander
Starting Price: $37,755
A Cypress Green 2023 Toyota Highlander Turbo Limited driving on the street.
As mentioned, Toyotas occupy plenty of spots on this list, and their midsize offering, the Highlander, joins it as one of the top midsize SUVs for expected resale value. While we await the full arrival of the larger and more upscale Grand Highlander, the standard Highlander still delivers buyers with plenty of bang for the buck in expected resale value.

The 2023 Highlander is now powered exclusively by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, replacing the previously standard V-6. The internal combustion-only model is available in six trims. The Highlander isn’t the most spacious model in its class, but like its Toyota stablemates, it’s respectable in just about every category. And, it is certainly expected to return buyers with quite a bit of a coin when sold.
5 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross
Starting Price: $23,610

The Toyota Corolla Cross was introduced in 2022, so how does it already occupy a spot on the list of SUVs with the best resale value? In short, it’s a Toyota. Spoiler alert, but you’ll notice this list is dominated by models from the Japanese automaker, so while there’s still not too much of a used market for the crossover bearing the Corolla name, its pedigree seems reason enough to assume it’ll have a high resale value in five years.

Like the Corolla sedan, the Cross isn’t particularly engaging to drive, but it does just about everything else well. It’s practical for its size, efficient, comes with a respectable list of standard features, and its starting price of just under $25,000 with destination makes it one of the more affordable models in the subcompact SUV class.
4 2023 Jeep Wrangler
Starting Price: $32,990

It may be a “Jeep thing,” but we understand that there is no better option for an off-road specialty SUV when it comes to retaining value. Of course, having a cult-like following will always help drive up prices on the used market. The Wrangler may be a bit of a niche choice for a compact SUV, but it’s one that provides bang for the buck on the trail or when it’s time to sell.

There are seemingly innumerable ways to tailor a 2023 Wrangler with 12 trims available, not including the PHEV models, and so many ways to customize any one of the models you could seemingly spend near its $33,000 starting price just in aftermarket parts and optional extras. But no matter the trim or whether it has two or four doors or one of several powertrain options, the 2023 Wrangler is expected to hold its value better than every SUV on the market, save for one.
3 2023 Honda Passport
Starting Price: $42,445
A front 3/4 shot of a Honda Passport Trailsport on a dirt track
No other SUV on sale today is expected to hold its value better than the 2023 Honda Passport. The Passport straddles the line between a typical two-row midsize SUV and those with three rows, making a versatile option in the class that prioritizes pragmaticism, comfort, efficiency, and value. That appears especially true when it’s time to trade it in for a new model.

The 2023 Passport is available in three trims, and all can handle the daily commute or a trek on the road less taken, particularly in the TrailSport trim. All models are equipped with a V-6 pumping out 280 horsepower with a tow rating of up to 5,000 pounds. Inside, the cabin is laid out intuitively, a back seat is spacious, and there’s an impressive 41 cubic feet of storage space behind the back row. The Passport starts at a higher price than many of its competitors, but none can match its return on dollars for its resale value.
2 2023 Toyota 4Runner
Starting Price: $40,890
A Midnight Black 4Runner parked on pavement in a front-three quarter shot with fall foliage in background.
The Toyota 4Runner is proof-positive that not all buyers want the latest and greatest in a midsize SUV. The 4Runner is well outdated compared to many of its rivals, but then again, many can’t match the Toyota’s reputation for being a rough-and-tumble SUV that has the steadfast reliability synonymous with the brand and the nameplate.

The 4Runner still sports a truck frame, a five-speed transmission, and a V-6 that is nearing the legal drinking age, but its old-school charm, spacious accommodations, tons of standard safety kit, and a bevy of off-road-tuned trims and aftermarket parts continue to place the 4Runner in the upper echelon of wilderness-taming SUVs. And very few can return buyers so much dough when it’s time to sell.
1 2023 Toyota RAV4
Starting Price: $27,975

More new Toyota RAV4s hit driveways last year than any other model in the U.S. outside of the Big Three’s full-size trucks. Despite selling like hotcakes and one seemingly on every corner, the RAV4 retains its value far better than almost all its compact SUV rivals.

The 2023 RAV4 has received some upgraded technology, and like its predecessors, it comes with a long list of standard amenities for an agreeable price throughout its range. Speaking of which, all models are powered by the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivering 203 horsepower, but buyers can choose from either front or all-wheel drive, and six trims, including the top-spec, more rough-and-tumble TRD Off-Road.
