The GWM Ora electric hatch from China is up to $4000 cheaper than before thanks to a price cut from this month. But it’s not Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle.
The price of the GWM Ora electric car from China has been cut as the first examples arrive in showrooms – but it has not reclaimed its title of Australia’s cheapest new electric vehicle.
The Chinese car-maker announced today the Ora electric hatch – about the same size as a Toyota Corolla – will now be priced from $39,990 plus on-road costs, a reduction of $4000 from the price announced five months ago.
Drive-away prices for the base model now range from $40,606 to $42,927 depending on state and territory – down from $3834 to $4964 compared to the previous prices.
GWM attributes the price cuts to “the costs of battery technology (falling) recently due to lower raw material prices”.
Despite the price cuts, the GWM Ora has not reclaimed the title of the most affordable new electric car on sale in Australia, which it lost last month to the MG4 and BYD Dolphin electric hatchbacks from China.
Drive-away costs for the base MG4 range from $40,284 to $42,618, while the base BYD Dolphin ranges from $39,490 to $41,810.
Dearer models in the GWM Ora range have also had price cuts: $45,990 for the Ora Extended Range (down $2000), and $51,990 Ora GT (down $2000).
Alongside the price cuts, GWM has added a new model to the Ora range, the Ultra, priced from $48,990 plus on-road costs.
It adds many of the luxury features from the Ora GT – such as a panoramic sunroof and hands-free tailgate – but goes without the GT’s sports body kit.
The Chinese car-maker has also announced a complementary home charging wallbox for Ora Extended Range, Ora Ultra and Ora GT customers – previously priced from $1690 and available to buyers who place an order before September 30, including those already waiting for delivery.
